Next time you see your stylist, ask questions and watch. How do you straighten/flat iron very thick/curly hair the salon way??

Honestly, it's easy. You use hair oil and take a well heated iron (you can get them at wal-mart for about $20.) You take parts of hair that are about a 1/2 inch in diameter and start at the roots and work down slowly. Very slowly. That should straighten it, part your hair using clips to make it easier. Although, I must say. Why fight the curls? Get it cut in layers where the top is shorter and it gets longer as it goes down. Use plenty of product and love the curls. Guys love them and think they are sexy. My best friend has thick and curly hair and now that she wears it the way she was born with it, she loves it.
First start with a good ceramic flat iron. Then get a good hair product to protect the hair before you start to dry. Then dry your hair with a round brush getting it as straight as possible, but more importantly, getting it completely dry. Then take small sections of hair and flat iron it. Put a little shine serum on and spray a little hair spray to hold it. And stay out of the rain.
Wash and dry your hair. As you dry your hair use a brush to brush it as straight as you can as you dry. Then section your hair off, starting with your neckline. Clip the rest of your hair up. Sections should be about 1 inch thick. Use your iron as close to your scalp as possible. Straighten this section then let a little more hair down out of the clip and continue until you've done all your hair. This is actually very time comsuming, but it is the best way. The real trick is using a professional flat iron. I'm in beauty school and do this at least 6 times a week. The irons that we use get as hot as 400 degrees. So if you've got a Wal-mart flat iron, it just doesn't get hot enough to do the job. You can purchase a flat iron at Sally's Beauty Supply that is pretty good though. Hot n' Gold is a good name brand of iron and it will get very hot! You can also purchase straightening serums that works well and helps, but none of the cheap stuff! There is one called Sexy Straight Hair, from the makers of Big Sexy, that is really good. You can get it at most salons or stores that sell name brand beauty products. It is a little costly but will give you the results that you want! Goodluck! :-)
what you need to get is a good iron preferably one you can adjust the temp and it is advisable to have a ceramic, if its really thick you may need really high heat, then make sure you get a flat iron spray so you dont fry your hair then after use a polishing cream or a shine spray and it should look good thats what i learned in a salon i worked in
